Shocks and Struts

Not all vehicles have both shocks and struts. Some have just struts and others have only shocks. Shocks are part of the overall suspension, and a strut is a complete suspension assembly. Both shocks and struts in your car perform two functions: They dampen spring oscillation and aid in ride control. It is the springs in your car that absorb the shocks and not the shock absorbers. The shock absorbers dampen the spring oscillation or bouncing so that your car would not bounce up and dopwn every time you go over a bump. In essence, shock absorbers keep the tires down on the road and prevent them from bouncing after hitting a bump.

1. What are common signs of worn out shocks/struts in my car?
As a common preventative measure you should always check for the following concerning your shocks: Leaks on the housing, dents on the shock or strut body, worn out rubber mounting bushings, pitted piston rods, crushed rubber bumpers from bottoming out, and finally abnormal wear on tires (high and low spots).
2. What is that clunking noise coming from my shocks/ struts even though they are new?
This is usually caused by a mounting problem, i.e. The mount itself may be worn enough to cause the shock/strut to move up and down, and not the shock or strut itself. Check the components that attach the shock or strut to the vehicle. Another reason for such noise is that the shock or strut mountings may not be tight enough causing the unit to have some slight movement between the bolt and bushings.
3. Is it recommended that I replace any other part while having my struts serviced?
Yes, it is also a good idea to replace both the strut mount and the strut boot when replacing struts. The strut mount optimizes suspension performance by providing a smooth steering response and reducing vibration. Strut boots will protect your new struts from dirt, dust, salt and leakage.
4. What is the difference between shocks and struts?
They both function the same way, but the largest difference is the way they mount to the vehicle. The strut design acts an integral part of the suspension by replacing the upper control arm and acting as a pivot point for the steering. The shock design is used in addition to the suspension and steering components.
